Paddling in Social Media?

Paddling in Social Media?

Here at Mancala we have taken a huge dive into the Social Media pool in the past month or so. We have always been involved and recognise the importance of joining the conversation.

We recognise that being an  Internet marketing company, we all need to move with the times as the internet is always changing and it seems now more than ever people spend their lives at the computer.
The first recognisable social networking site was launched in 1997, SixDegrees.com where you could make a profile and list your friends. That was 13 years ago and it’s fair to say that today social networking has advanced greatly. Now not only is social media used by the public but businesses are taking full advantage as well with so many sites to choose from with millions of members.

My friend Emilie Hampton who is studying at Newcastle University has just completed her dissertation titled “The Impact and Value of Social Media for Marketing and Business Development” by questioning 360 businesses using social media she has completed an extensive survey which helped achieve the results. And what is interesting about the results is the majority of businesses have only recently started participating in social media. About 1/3 have only jumped on the band wagon in the last 1-2 years and about 1/4 have only started in the past 12 month and with many of these businesses it is clear that the full potential of social media is not being achieved.

Most businesses have a Facebook or Twitter but understanding it and becoming an active member with valuable updates is a whole different story. Some companies just don’t have the time to constantly update. But taking 5 minutes out of your day to share some news can really make all the difference.
